Garbage Bread

One man’s trash can be another man’s treasure.

Garbage Bread is not trash because it can be used for anything, but rather because you can put almost anything in it. It’ll still taste good. This version is filled with ground beef, bacon and green onions. It also has cheddar cheese and a generous sprinkle of steak seasoning. This makes it a delicious, meaty snack bread that’s hard to resist.

It’s super simple to make, and you’d be hard-pressed not to believe it. It takes little more than browning some ground beef and seasoning it.

Serves 6
15m prep time
20m cook time

INGREDIENTS
1/2 lb bacon
1/2 yellow onion, diced
1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon steak seasoning
1/2 cup green onions, finely chopped
2 cups cheddar cheese, grated
1 (14 oz) can French bread dough (can substitute pizza dough if needed)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 375°F.

In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy but still chewy. Remove and chop. Set aside.

Drain most of the fat from pan, then add ground beef and onion. Season with steak seasoning, and salt and pepper and cook until beef is no longer pink, 5-6 minutes.

Stir in bacon and green onions and remove from heat.

Roll out French bread dough in a rectangle. Spread beef mixture evenly over dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge. Top with cheese.

Starting with a long side, roll dough up tightly and tuck ends under 1/2-inch on each side. Transfer to a baking sheet.

Brush top with melted butter and bake until golden brown, 20-25 minutes.
