Ingredients

  • 2 ounces good-quality vodka (Tito’s, Absolut, or your favorite brand)
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice (about half a large lemon; Meyer lemons add extra fragrance)
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec or Cointreau (for that orange-citrus depth)
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water; see Note for honey swap)
  • Sugar, for rimming (superfine or caster sugar works best)
  • Lemon twist or thin slice, for garnish

Instructions

  • Chill a martini glass in the freezer for 5 minutes. Rim the glass with sugar by rubbing a lemon wedge around the rim and dipping it into sugar.
  • In a cocktail shaker, combine vodka, fresh lemon juice, triple sec, and simple syrup. Add ice cubes.
  • Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill and dilute.
  • Strain the mixture into the prepared glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or slice.
  • Twist a lemon peel over the surface to release oils and place on the rim. Sip slowly and enjoy.

Notes

• Vodka choice matters—mid-range brands give a smooth finish without breaking the bank. • Always juice lemons by hand for brightness; bottled juice can taste flat. • For homemade simple syrup, heat equal parts granulated sugar and water until the sugar dissolves, then cool.
