Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (The main protein in the dish)
  • 3/4 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese Divided; half is used in the sour cream mixture, and the rest is sprinkled on top
  • 4 slices of mozzarella cheese Adds a gooey, melty layer on top of the chicken breasts
  • 1 cup rich sour cream Forms the base of the creamy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch Helps to thicken the sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Adds a herby flavor to the dish
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Enhances the savory flavor
  • A pinch of salt Seasons the chicken and the sauce
  • A pinch of black pepper Adds a mild spice to the dish
  • Cooking oil for greasing the dish Prevents the casserole from sticking to the baking dish

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Start by warming your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly oil a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent the casserole from sticking.
  • Prepare the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  • Make the Sour Cream Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 of the finely shredded Parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of black pepper. Stir until smooth.
  • Assemble the Casserole: Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on top of each chicken breast. Spoon the sour cream mixture over the chicken, spreading evenly. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese over the top.
  • Bake to Perfection: Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, until the chicken is fully cooked and the cheese is golden and bubbly. If the cheese browns too quickly, cover with foil.
  • Let It Rest: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  • Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley or chives if desired, and serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

Customize the casserole by adding your favorite vegetables, trying different cheese combinations, or lightening up the dish with low-fat ingredients.
