Ingredients

For the Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme optional
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots optional

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

  • Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until tender.
  • Drain the potatoes and return to the pot. Add milk and butter, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Cover to keep warm.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks (7-10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  • Add diced onion and minced garlic; sauté until onions are translucent (3-5 minutes).

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  • Sprinkle flour over the beef and onions, stirring to combine. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Gradually stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes until thickened. Add frozen peas and carrots, if using, and cook until heated through.

Step 4: Serve the Dish

  • Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates and top with beef gravy.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, use plant-based ground meat and vegetable broth.
