Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 large head cabbage cored and sliced
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp paprika

Instructions

  • Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped bacon and cook until crispy, about 10 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside on paper towels. Leave the bacon fat in the pot.
  • Add diced onions to the pot and sauté for 5 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until onions are caramelized and garlic is fragrant.
  • Add the sliced cabbage to the pot and stir to combine with onions and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage begins to soften.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  • Uncover, stir, and adjust seasoning as needed. Add the crispy bacon and stir to combine. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives, if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

For added flavor, try substituting smoked paprika for regular paprika or adding a splash of apple cider vinegar before simmering.
