Cleaning a mattress is not a luxury but a necessity, especially as it ages and becomes stained or infested with dust mites. Therefore, it’s essential to clean, deodorize, and also disinfect it. And for this, there’s nothing better than natural cleaners and disinfectants to tackle this tough task.

Over time, a mattress loses its luster. Stains, mold, urine, bacteria… A mattress can quickly become dirty and emit bad odors. Eco-friendly and economical grandmother’s tips can remedy these various problems and leave your mattress as good as new.

Soda Crystals: A powerful ingredient that acts as a disinfectant, capable of dissolving the most stubborn stains like urine or blood. Our grandmothers understood its degreasing power, making this cleaning product a multi-purpose cleaner for many household surfaces. In fact, it’s used to make homemade detergents, clean oven racks, and bathroom sinks.

For this, you’ll need:

A cup of soda crystals
Hot water
A basin
Sponge

In a container filled with hot water, dissolve the soda crystals and mix. Soak a sponge in this liquid and scrub the stained areas of the mattress. Then rinse with a glove moistened with water. Let it air dry and find a clean mattress.

Dishwashing Liquid: This is a formidable trick against mattress stains, especially if they are recent. Mix hot water with dishwashing liquid and clean the mattress with a sponge soaked in this liquid. Let it dry in the sun if possible for a few hours. Your mattress will be clean, tidy, and odorless.

White Vinegar: Also known as household alcohol, white vinegar is a very useful cleaning product in the home. For cleaning mattress stains, this stain remover can be your best ally.

For this, you’ll need:

500ml of white vinegar

200 ml of warm water

2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid

Mix the ingredients, soak a clean sponge in this liquid and wring it out before scrubbing the entire surface of the mattress. Then rinse with another moistened and wrung-out sponge. Finish the cleaning by rubbing the mattress with a dry or microfiber cloth to absorb as much moisture as possible and let the mattress dry in the sun if possible.

Baking Soda: Baking soda is the solution for urine stains and odors. Simply sprinkle the white powder on the area to be cleaned and let it act for at least 30 minutes. Then scrub the area with a sponge soaked in soapy water and rinse with a damp cloth to complete the cleaning. Let it dry with the bedroom window open for ventilation. To get rid of dust mites, sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress surface and let it act for a few hours before vacuuming it off. Your mattress will be free from parasites that can cause allergies.

Hydrogen Peroxide: Also known as peroxide, this product is effective even against the oldest mold stains.

For this, you’ll need:

30 ml of hydrogen peroxide

1 tablespoon of baking soda

Mix the two ingredients and scrub the affected areas with an old toothbrush. Then remove the excess cleaning product with a damp cloth and let it dry in a well-ventilated place.

Lemon: This trick is used to remove wine stains, for example. Mix the juice of half a lemon with half a cup of water and vigorously rub your mattress with this mixture using a damp cloth. Let your mattress air out.

Ethyl Alcohol: To get rid of bad odors emanating from your mattress, mix half a glass of ethyl alcohol and half a glass of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray this solution over the entire mattress surface and let it dry for 30 minutes. For a pleasant scent, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil like lavender or lemon eucalyptus. Your bedding will smell pleasantly good in addition to being disinfected.

Talcum Powder: After thoroughly cleaning the mattress with one of the above tips, talcum powder remains the last product to use to complete the cleaning and perfect it. Talcum powder has an absorbent capacity and also eliminates bad odors thanks to its sweet and subtle fragrance. It’s particularly used when the mattress is old and emits unpleasant odors or becomes damp.

To use, sprinkle talcum powder over the freshly cleaned and rinsed area of the mattress. Allow this fragrant powder to absorb the remaining moisture throughout the day. In the end, vacuum up the talcum powder residue. You’ll have a healthy mattress that smells good. Impressive, isn’t it?
